Another step backward for Redskins

The first game of the Sherm Lewis era came on the big stage of “Monday Night Football,” quite a change from calling B-7 during bingo games at a senior center in Novi, Mich., just three weeks earlier.

The switch, foisted on coach Jim Zorn by owner Dan Snyder and front office boss Vinny Cerrato a week earlier, hardly paid dividends. The 10-point first half matched Washington’s most prolific first half of the season.

And with the defense torched by Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson for a 67-yard end-around on the game’s fourth play of a 27-17 loss to the NFC East rival Eagles, the Redskins continued their descent to NFL irrelevance.

The muzzle belongs on Snyder, not Zorn

Somewhere under a big tent out in the Midwest sits a group of clowns who get together after their circus performances and make fun of the guy who has the job of the human cannonball.

That’s because no matter how horrendous one person’s job may seem to be, there is always someone else who seemingly has it far worse.
Nowadays, forlorn Washington Redskins coach Jim Zorn must feel like that lonely human cannonball.
What exactly was Zorn’s job when the Redskins hosted the Eagles at FedEx Field on Monday night? It certainly wasn’t the same one that 31 other fortunate men who call themselves coaches in the National Football League have on a weekly basis.

Largent rips Snyder’s handling of team

Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent said during a radio interview Tuesday that Redskins coach Jim Zorn considered resigning when owner Daniel Snyder decided Zorn would no longer call Washington’s plays.

Largent, who caught passes from his old friend for the Seattle Seahawks between 1976 and 1984, ripped the Redskins and Snyder during an interview on KJR radio of Seattle, saying he believed Snyder’s decision was an attempt to force Zorn’s resignation.

Zorn did consider resigning, Largent said, but ultimately decided not to quit on the team.

“Yes, he did consider it, and no, he did not want to give up those responsibilities,” Largent told KJR, “but they went to the point of pulling out his contract and saying, ‘You have got to do whatever the owner tells you to do.’ …

Zorn pretty sure for a pink slip

The Jim Zorn era in Washington effectively came to an end on an unusually cold, windy afternoon before 12,000 empty seats and 79,000 angry, bundled-up customers. The coach hired for his offensive expertise couldn’t generate any points in the first half against a winless team at home for the second time in three weeks.

After Sunday’s 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Zorn apparently will coach again next Monday against the Philadelphia Eagles – but only after giving up the cherished playcalling part of his duties at the request of executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, who met with the coach Sunday evening with the blessing of owner Dan Snyder.

The Redskins infamously haven’t scored 30 points in any of Zorn’s 22 games. Struggling so mightily against the likes of the Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, St. Louis Rams, Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers will earn a coach a pink slip, whether that comes after a loss to the Eagles that drops the Redskins to 2-5 or at the end of a season that’s rapidly heading toward a train wreck of a finish.

One switch that happened Sunday, the halftime benching of quarterback Jason Campbell for Todd Collins, received a ringing endorsement from the crowd but produced only brief dividends with a 42-yard bomb to Santana Moss that set up a field goal, leaving a quandary at the position for the Philadelphia game.
