D-Mac on the Skins: Help or Hindrance

The Redskins have rebuilt this year, in a way. Mike Shanahan is the new head cheese which should serve the Redskins well. He is an excellent coach with a proven track record. Another change is the much-publicized defection of Donovan McNabb from the Eagles to the division-rival Redskins. McNabb is supposedly the man to take the Redskins back to the playoffs, but he is already having injury troubles. One must wonder how far he can take them on a gimpy leg that will probably become worst as the season wears on.

Clinton Portis gets help in the running game this year in Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. It’s pretty evident that they need it, as the Redskins were on of the worst rushing teams last year. All three of these guys are past their prime, so it’s difficult to see how much they can actually contribute. Then there’s the injury history to consider as well.

The combo of Shanahan and McNabb should serve well. As long as they can shut Albert Haynesworth up or ship him out, they should be serviceable on defense as they were last year. McNabb has a playmaker in Santana Moss that should be exciting to watch.

In the end I think the Redskins will be a vicinity with the Eagles. They will finish 9-7, unless McNabb has a couple more tricks up his sleeve.

Redskins Are Predicted to Finish in Third Place in the NFC East

In the next few weeks leading up to the beginning of the 2010 NFL season, I will be making predictions for every division in both conferences. I am starting off with the always tough NFC East, where every team in the division has a chance to be over .500. I am starting off with who will finish last in the division and work my way up to the division winner.

3. Washington Redskins: The Redskins aren’t playing around this season. They have a new head coach in Mike Shanahan, a new starting quarterback in Donovan McNabb, two new running backs to go with the already great Clinton Portis in Willie Parker and Larry Johnson. The Redskins were the joke of the NFL last season and they are making sure this season that it won’t happen again. The only position the Redskins didn’t make improvements in and they should have is the wide receiver position. The only somewhat reliable receiver they have is Santana Moss. Do not forget about tight end Chris Cooley, he will probably be McNabb’s main target throughout the season. McNabb made things work on the Eagles for years without big name receivers so the Redskins do not have to worry too much.
I think this team is going to be a run oriented team anyways. Shanahan is known for having the best running backs when he was with the Broncos. On top of that Shanahan coached Portis for a few years on the Broncos before he was traded to the Redskins. I expect the Redskins to spread the ball out to all three running backs because Portis and Parker are known to get injured, maybe with a lesser load they will all be fresh and thrive. Saying all of this I think the Redskins still need another season to become a playoff team. I think they will be 8-8 this season.

Sources: Redskins to host Westbrook

Even though the Washington Redskins have added Larry Johnson and Willie Parker to a backfield that includes Clinton Portis, the team has invited Brian Westbrook for a visit on Wednesday, according to sources.

Westbrook comes highly recommended by his former Eagles teammate, Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb, who apparently has made his case for the running back since McNabb was acquired by Washington in a trade, a source said.

Westbrook, who was released by the Eagles in February, has passed a physical with the St. Louis Rams, where he also has a familiarity with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, a former Eagles assistant.

Westbrook’s ailments that have passed physical screenings include knee and ankle injuries, as well as multiple concussions.

Can McNabb elevate the Redskins to new heights

If you take a look at Donovan McNabb’s career, he seems to be a top level quarterback in the NFL. Not to knock on Jason Campbell or anything but I see McNabb helping the Redskins reach the playoffs this year. I know it is early and the season has not started but on paper the team looks strong. With the addition of Larry Johnson and Willie Parker, the running back spot looks top notch. The receivers look to be in good shape and you can never complain about their tight end core.

The one area I think needs work would be the offensive line. If they work a little harder during the off season I believe they can be at a level that can help them succeed this season. It is not always about getting new players, sometimes you just have to work with what you have and make those players better.

Redskins, Grossman agree

Although many expected the Redskins to sign former Broncos quarterback Chris Simms, Washington made a different move at the position.

The Redskins reached agreement Wednesday with former Bears and Texans quarterback Rex Grossman on a one-year deal, the team announced.

The deal reunites Grossman, 29, with Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who also spent last season in Houston.

Grossman, whose career stats include 33 touchdowns, 36 interceptions and 6,197 throwing yards, led the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season.

But he played in only 12 games the next two seasons, and left the Bears as a free agent in 2009.

Missed Chances In A Lost Season

The coach didn’t want to play the what-if game, knowing it could haunt him. It will haunt Jim Zorn anyway.

With the Redskins now playing more for future employment, they can look back on numerous missed chances to be playing for something greater.

“We’ve had opportunities,” Redskins running back Rock Cartwright said.

No kidding. Actually, they’ve had quite a few. And, with proper execution, their reality entering December would be much different.

However, the reality also is this: good teams find a way to win; bad teams find ways to lose. And the 3-8 Redskins found ways to lose even before the injuries mounted.

Here are some key failed sequences:

The goal line vs. Detroit » The Redskins drove downfield with ease on their first possession and faced a first-and-goal from the Lions’ 9-yard line. Three plays later they had a fourth-and-goal from the 1. They ran left. But lead blocker Mike Sellers went to the wrong hole, a big reason Clinton Portis failed to score.

The stop served to inspire lowly Detroit. The Lions drove 99 yards for their own touchdown. And the Redskins never recovered. Good teams do.

Redskin injury woes continue to mount

The Washington Redskins are shuffling their lineup again after losing their strong safety and right tackle to multiweek injuries.

In addition, Clinton Portis is recovering from a concussion and is doubtful to play in next week’s game against Denver.

Safety Chris Horton damaged a ligament in his left big toe during Sunday’s 31-17 loss to Atlanta. He’s out a minimum of four to six weeks — and it will be four to six months if a specialist decides the toe needs surgery.

Offensive lineman Mike Williams, who has started the last four games, is out two to four weeks after tearing a ligament in his ankle. He will also see a specialist but doesn’t expect to require surgery.

Portis took a helmet-to-helmet blow as he was tackled at the end of a running play during the first quarter on Sunday. He will undergo a test Tuesday to help determine his availability for the Broncos game.

Can it get any worse in Washington?

Redskins fans got the weekend off. Mercifully, they were allowed to rake leaves, ready the garage for winter or watch more functional NFL teams compete last Sunday, which was Washington’s bye week.

What’s coming out of Ashburn, Va., these days has become almost comical. I write “almost” because I know for many loyal followers of the burgundy and gold, it’s not funny. A franchise that boasts five world titles, including three Super Bowls, and 17 Hall of Famers in its history shouldn’t be subjected to the increasingly frequent and loud calls for change.

Those calls aren’t directed at the embattled head coach, Jim Zorn, though. He seems to have earned sympathy points from many around the league, although it is quite clear that he is in over his head and needs a change of scenery. The masses are turning on the one person who can’t be fired — the owner.
